Mother

Ryan, who rarely watches TV with David and me, sat down with us for a couple of minutes when this commercial came on —

I’ve seen this commercial about three times now and I think it’s pretty damned amazing! Everytime I see the rattlesnake, I think, “If you give a snake a rattle…” What does that even mean? Yep, that’s all the thought I have for now, but I know there’s more developing in my little gray cells. Hmm.

Anyway, at the end of the commercial, Ryan giggled nervously and said, “Don’t mess with Mother, huh?”

Because Ryan has autism and can be literal, I said, “Well, it means don’t mess with Mother Nature.”

He giggled even more and said, “Yeah, that too.”

Okay, fine — apparently, he can generalize as well.

Should I be offended? Naw, I think I’ll just enjoy the power of his little acknowledgement.

Of course, this commercial also brought to mind other commercials from the 1970’s; specifically, the “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature” commercials like this one —

or this one —

so I thought I would share them with you.

Somewhere up among the stars, my mother is beaming with happiness because she too still has the power —

Anyway, I’m about a week early, but Happy Mother’s Day to all you Mothers out there! And for the rest of you, just keep in mind,

“It’s not nice to f**k with Mother in whichever guise she chooses to embody!”

TTFN,

Mona

PS —

If you like the song for the “Don’t Mess With Mother” commercial, it’s called “Last Rites” by Megadeth and you can listen to it in its entirety below —

PPS ~ I was reminded that today is also Cinco de Mayo! Oops. So Happy Mexican Food and Frozen Margaritas to all who are celebrating! Now, I’m off to get my own frozen margarita with extra tequila please. This past week has been a real mother, ya know!

  1. I knew someone who had an embroidery in her kitchen which read, “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!” Which I think sums it up nicely.

  2. I remember those commercials…
And sadly, have been known to quote them now and then.
    As for Mother power?
It’s good that your son recognizes yours.

  3. I love nostalgia. Obviously never before seen that commercial, but it was great. I love all the stuff you wrote about and it makes me look at America in a completely different light, because you and fellow bloggers live there. A regional saying that mothers said years ago,and my mother did too, when a child kept going on,and on,and on..saying “Mum..Mum.. Mum..!”You know how irritating kids can be. My mum used to shout “mum’s arse!”. Quite a common one apparently. x I enjoyed this post Mona x

    • Pip,
It’s so good to hear from you and thanks for your kind words! I loved your story…Mum’s arse, you say? I bet you’ve said that once or twice yourself. Personally, my kids would have gotten “the look” with a deafening silence from me if they’d ever tried to bother me in that way. If you like nostalgia and specifically, Linda Ronstadt, you should check out River’s World today 5/27/19. You can find her by clicking on her name above highlighted in magenta or you can find her at https://riversworld.live/. I’ll be back in full swing on June 1, whatever that means (new blog post probably.) For now, I’m off to see what you’ve got going on your site. 🙂
